For Immediate Release:
April 25, 2013

Washington, DC – Over the past several weeks, Councilmember Kenyan R. McDuffie (D – Ward 5) has worked with the H Street Main Street program and the Department of Small and Local Business Development (DSLBD) to enlarge the boundaries of H Street Main Street to include Ward 5.

“With the help of the D.C. Main Streets program, H Street is now a thriving, commercial hub,” said Councilmember McDuffie. “Extending the Main Streets program to include Bladensburg and Benning Roads will allow us to enhance the visibility of this corridor and give local businesses the opportunity to connect to services that support their growth.”

Extending the Main Street boundaries and related funding allocation, spearheaded by McDuffie, will link small businesses on Bladensburg and Benning Roads with more support from the H Street Main Street organization. It will also promote a more vibrant neighborhood streetscape for residents to enjoy.

The expansion will extend H Street Main Street to include portions of Bladensburg and Benning Roads in Ward 5. Created in 2002, the D.C. Main Streets program fosters retail investment in targeted corridors. DSLBD provides comprehensive technical and financial assistance to neighborhood nonprofit organizations, which manage the Main Street for the benefit of the community.
