PRESS RELEASE: Councilmember Kenyan McDuffie Supports A Day Without A Woman

For Immediate Release: March 6, 2017

Washington, D.C. – Today, Councilmember Kenyan R. McDuffie (D – Ward 5) announced that, in solidarity with women across the United States and the globe, women in the Ward 5 Office will have the option not to work on Wednesday, March 8, A Day Without A Woman.

“I was proud to attend the Women’s March on January 21 with my wife and daughters, and I remain inspired by the voices rising up across the country to resist sexism, bigotry, and hate.

Despite the progress that has been made, women are still undervalued in our society. From unequal pay to discrimination, it is obvious to anyone who cares that there continues to be inequality between the genders. I am proud to have championed policies on the D.C. Council that move us closer to gender equity, but it is still not enough.

So I am proud to supports actions like A Day Without A Woman, and I encourage everyone, particularly men, to use this as an opportunity to reflect on what each of us can do to support and uplift the women in our lives.”

Below are some ways everyone can take part in A Day Without A Woman:

  • Avoid shopping for one day – with exceptions for small, women- and minority-owned businesses. Or, shop at one of the Ward 5 businesses supporting A Day Without A Woman.
  • If you are not a woman, step up to do the work (paid or unpaid) normally done by a woman.
  • Wear red in solidarity.
