STATEMENT: Councilmember McDuffie on the Proposed VRE Train Parking Facility

For Immediate Release: February 28, 2017

Washington, DC – Councilmember Kenyan R. McDuffie (D – Ward 5) released the following statement on the proposed VRE train parking facility adjacent to New York Ave NE:

“I oppose the proposal to park VRE trains along New York Avenue NE.

When I was elected to the Council, I spearheaded the creation of the Ward 5 Industrial Land Use Task Force and I share the vision for New York Avenue NE as outlined in the Task Force’s final report, Ward 5 Works.

The only acceptable path forward is for VRE to propose a facility that parks the trains underground, or creates a new infill rail station for MARC and VRE and, thus, would facilitate the required economic benefits for the surrounding communities.
