McDuffie’s Statement on CSX Incident

Dear Residents,

Earlier this morning a CSX freight train travelling from Cumberland, MD to Hamlet, NC derailed near Rhode Island Avenue NE and 9th Street.  The DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department was dispatched to the scene because one of the derailed cars was leaking sodium hydroxide, a hazardous material.  At approximately 9:00am, I arrived on the scene and engaged with Chief Dean of DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department and emergency first responders who responded.  As of 11:00am the leaking car has been contained and sealed.

Please note that Rhode Island Avenue is closed from 4th to 12th streets and the Rhode Island Avenue-Brentwood Metro Station on the red line is also closed. Metro will establish bus shuttle service between the NoMa and Brookland Metro stations.

I will update you as further information becomes available.

Please see the full statement released from CSX.

In Service,

Kenyan
