Washington, D.C. – Councilmember Kenyan R. McDuffie (D – Ward 5) released the following statement today, on the rash of shootings that occurred overnight.
“Tragically, we have yet again lost several lives to an eruption of senseless violence. Since last night, and through this morning I have been in contact with Assistant Chief Dianne Groomes regarding 6 different crime scenes in the District. At least 3 people have lost their lives and several others have been wounded.
“We must address crime in our city, especially gun related crime, in a comprehensive manner. Reducing instances of gun violence is not just the job of the Metropolitan Police Department, but the responsibility of every government agency. Last Tuesday I held a roundtable to begin exploring the recommendations of the White House’s Task Force on 21st Century Policing. I will be continuing the conversation with the community and District agencies by convening a Public Safety and Crime Summit on July 30, 2015 from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. at the New Samaritan Baptist Church which is located at 1100 Florida Avenue, NE.
“The recent spike in crime in our city is unacceptable. Let us come together as a community to stem the tide so we no longer have to wake up to news like this.”
