Washington, D.C. – Councilmember Kenyan R. McDuffie (D – Ward 5) released the following statement today on the police response to the incident at the Navy Yard.

“The Metropolitan Police Department, Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department, District Homeland Security and Emergency Management Agency, and all of our partner federal law enforcement agencies responded swiftly to the Navy Yard in response to reports of an active shooter. Though thankfully the reports of an active shooter proved to be unsubstantiated, the unfortunate reality is that we must continue to stay vigilant and ready to respond to incidents and threats.

“I want to especially thank the brave women and men who work as first responders. As we move forward and review the after-action reports, I will continue to work with all of our agencies to be sure they have the training and technology they need to continue to protect our city. This holiday weekend we can help our first responders by always reporting any suspicious activity to 911.”
